71 Respectable Members of Society Arrested in Child Porn Sting: What Can We Learn?

child abuse casts a shadowRecent child porn sting nabs 70 high profile, secular professionals- police officers, paramedics, a Little League coach, a nurse…

“One of the men caught was a Boy Scout den leader and little league coach- “The arrest came as a shock to neighbors, who described Silber as a “typical Rockland neighbor.””Surprised? I was shocked,” said Vic Robbins, 66, a retiree who lives across the street. “He’s always got kids at his house. He’s very active in the community. Lovely wife. Two nice kids … I would never have any suspicion that anything wasn’t normal.” “

It’s always a shock.  It’s the last person you’d expect. This is precisely typical. They can’t be successful predators if they give off a skeevy vibe. Of course they want to convey friendliness and healthy normality- and they are good at it.

Successfully fooling you is part of the unholy glee they feel over what they are doing.

“”They like that standing — being publicly this good person and in private this deviant person. They like the idea of that balance,” he says. “With some people — particularly those in good standing — they have this idea they can fool people and get away with these really bad things and nobody would suspect them and that’s part of the drive also.”

Gorgens adds that in many cases, the positions of respect they hold in society are no accident.

“Serial pedophiliac offenders are drawn to roles where they have access and are in positions of trust and authority,” she says. “They may have sought them out.””

Of course they seek such positions deliberately.

“In January, investigators arrested Fanelli, the police chief of suburban Mount Pleasant, N.Y. He pleaded not guilty this week to federal charges of knowingly receiving and distributing child pornography.Court papers allege that Fanelli, 54, told investigators that he taught sexual abuse awareness classes to elementary and middle school students. He said he began looking at child porn as research for the classes and that it grew into a “personal interest.” “

Another criminal was a rabbi who taught at a girls’ school and homeschooled his own and other children.  One of the 71 criminals was a woman who had used her own children in child porn.

One creep installed a hidden camera in a changing room and he secretly videotaped one of his little boys’ friends when she and her brother came over to swim.  He edited out pictures of anybody but this 7 year old child, and then used her pictures to trade with other child pornographers.

“n a press conference, authorities revealed that a number of those charged had already been arrested on child porn charges in the past, including: Brian Fanneli, chief of the Mount Pleasant Police Department in Valhalla, New York; Rabbi Samuel Waldman of Brooklyn, who taught at an all-girls school; and Jonathan Silber, a Boy Scout leader and little league coach in Rockland County. “

How on earth did they remain in their positions as long as they did with those records?

One of them had images he had obtained from an 11 year old child in Guam.  He had managed to chat the boy up on the internet.

At the afternoon news conference, officials are expected to emphasize that child pornography has spread through society, including to adults often entrusted with caring for children.

As computer technology has advanced and users have become more skilled it has become easier for collectors to put together images and to exchange files with one another as part of a peer-to-peer network, the source said.

“This past March, 14 men were arrested for operating a child pornography image distribution network that federal authorities said had 27,000 members who had access to images of around 250 children from 39 states and five countries outside the United States. The subscription website the perpetrators used to access the photos ran from June, 2012 until June, 2013.”

Protect your children.  Monitor internet use.  This isn’t a matter of trusting your kids, it’s a matter of recognizing that child predators are really good at what they do, and they are able to fool adults, so of course they can fool children.

Don’t be naive. Recognize that charismatic, friendly, responsible members of society in positions of trust are not somehow immune to being child predators.  Being admired, respected, and trusted is something child predators work very, very hard at.  Don’t leave your kids alone with others.  Background checks only turn up predators who have been caught and convicted. Most of them never will be.

Teach your children that they have private parts that are not to be looked at or seen by anybody but parents and doctors, and that even then, if anybody, no matter how loved and trusted, touches them in ways that make them uncomfortable, they should tell, and they will be believed. Teach them that if that ever happens they need to know it’s not their fault.

Educate yourself and those around you.

Don’t be like this:

“Christians often apply a heavy dosage of law to victims and gospel to offenders.”

That last link is a long read, but it is extremely informative and useful for bringing you up to speed on the pathology of child molesters, particularly ‘religious’ child molesters. According to some studies, they tend to have more victims and, if they are clergy, are more likely to use force against their victims.   Print it out, share it with others, including your church leadership.
