Slavery today

Slavery in Africa- the Tuareg have been practicing hereditary slavery for generations, and freed slaves are trapped in their caste system only one rung above slaves.  More here, along with ways you can help.

Africa is the epi-center of modern day slavery and it’s heartbreaking.

America has problems and we can definitely do better.  You will not convince me racism does not exist here because I have seen it. But we can work on our issues withoutfalling prey to the ignorant belief that slavery is uniquely an issue with American history only.

I was literally laughed out of the room the other day when I brought this issue up. A black man accused me of deflecting and insinated that I’m racist for taking light away from the American Black person’s plight.

It’s so complicated. Because honestly, I do believe that there is familial trauma that stems from the break up of the family during slavery, from Jim Crow laws, from lynchings that most white people never heard of, but make up a deep and dark part o the family stories and experiences of black families. I don’t want to minimize that.

OTOH, I have heard from more than one black person who seriously did not realize that slavery has always existed around the world and it is not just an instiution created in America by white people for black people, and it’s kind of shocking when that happens.

All times, all peoples: A world history of slavery, by Milton Meltzer is one book that gives details of other slave histories. I find it useful to to just look up any given country and the word slavery to see what its history is. I have a blog post a few months back about a book on China I picked up that just sort of casually mentions the slave trade in relationto one of the most magnificent of the Chinese Empires without making any kind of fuss or song and dance about it- when, in fact, the slave trade was so immense it must have devastated millions, and that magnificent civilization would not have existed at all without it- and their most preserved city is a UNESCO world heritage site.

I think where America was unique- and not in a good way- is in making slavery race-based. That said, however, it’s kind of that way in several parts of Africa- like with the Tuareg. Not quite race based, but tribe based, whcih is only kissing cousin’s distance.

Also, do you know of a good history of slavery? A general one; enough to get a taste of the history of slavery and to begin to know the correct questions to ask.
