Nothing to Envy

The book is Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick
I strongly recommend it, and it should be followed by These are the Generations by Eric Foley, which is specifically about Christians in North Korea.

Not deliberately, but somehow I seem to have made something of a theme of reading books about life in North Korea, defectors, life after defecting, and so on. It wasn’t on purpose, but it is true that I had the distinct privilege of meeting some people who worked with North Korean defectors and Christians when we lived in the Philippines and it made a deep impression. I miss hearing their stories so very much.

And to think that Pyong Yang had a world renowned Christian academy for missionary kids in Asia. I think Ruth Graham went their briefly before becoming too homesick. How awful for the Christians that were trapped there. MacArthur wanted to use nukes on the North Koreans/Chinese, but could not. That is an awful choice to make – would it have done any good? MacArthur and his father before him always dreamed of a western friendly Asia….

You might like this video about a South Korean man who is raising 10 North Korean boys:

In the video, the “Dad” mentions that North Koreans are considered “minorities” in South Korea and picked on at school, etc.
