Gun Violence in Chicago

This past labor day weekend Chicago saw at least 35 people shot, seven killed.  I think they are up to nearly 2000 people shot this year.

I’ve been told multiple times that the gun problem in Chicago is that they keep bringing in guns from Indiana- which doesn’t have the same gun violence problem.  What makes those guns suddenly turn violent when they cross the border between Indiana and Illinois?  Fact is, only 60% of illegal guns recovered in Chicago come from outside Illinois, and they don’t all come from Indiana.

Per CDC, the number of “gun homicide” victims who, in 2013-2017, lived in Cook County, IL (home to Chicago) is GREATER THAN the number of “gun homicide” victims who lived in any one of 46 ENTIRE STATES.

Two years ago Police Superintendant Eddie Johnson says the problem is related to repeat offenders getting nothing but slaps on the wrist for crimes.  Sounds really serious:

“”It’s a small sub-section of the population in Chicago that’s driving this gun violence,” Johnson said. “1,400 individuals, who are repeat gun offenders, just imagine if we took 50 percent of them off the street where our gun violence would go in the city of Chicago.”

“Gun offenders get slaps on the wrist in this city – and it has to stop. I need our judicial partners and our state legislators to help me close this gap,” he said.”

You can’t fix a problem you’re not allowed to acknowledge exists, We’re supposed to be pretend that we don’t know, to look the other way, and to accept silly claims like the one about all the guns from Indiana being to blame.  To mention violence in CHicago is to be called a racist. Unfortunately, or for this discussion fortunately, that word has been worn threadbare and no longer means what it once did.   looks more like people in Chicago value human life less than people in the states that border Illinois.  Perhaps we could look at some root causes of this psychopathic lack of empathy in Chicago’s underworld and address that?  The gang problem is huge, and I don’t know how you fix that without going Duterte Death squads.  Things have been wrong there for decades, very, very wrong.  I don’t really know what the answer is, beyond they need the real Jesus, but how to get from point A to point B is hard to imagine.  MIssionaries like Jim and Elizabeth Elliot, maybe, willing to put their lives on the line and try to work with the hardened gang members, who make life a threatening danger to all in their neighbourhoods, and prayer and fasting for revival.
