Keith Ranier and Allison Mack arrested on sex trafficking and slavery charges

Allison Mack and Keith Raniere have been arrested on charges of sex trafficking and slavery, amon other things.  These activities took place through Raniere’s organization NXIVM.

NXIVM was founded in 1998 by Keith Raniere. It’s marketed itself as an MLM offering personal and professional development.  Raniere has a previous history of shady business deals combined with friendships and ties to people in high places, both in politics and in entertainment.  When Bill Clinton was governor his then Attorney General charged Ranier with fraud for one of his enterprises.  He left Arkansas, and later founded NXIVM.

According to Wikipedia, “Clients have been alleged to include Rischard Branson and actresses Linda EvansAllison MackKristin Kreuk, and Nicki Clyne.[12] The NXIVM training system is administered through Executive Success Programs, Inc. In 2003 Forbes magazine reported that some 3,700 people had taken part in Nxivm’s “Executive Success Program,” and named Sheila Johnson, co-founder of BETAntonia Novello, former Surgeon General of the United States, Stephen Cooper of Enron, and Ana Cristina Fox, daughter of former Mexican president Vicente Fox.”
The Bronfman sisters, heirs to the Seagram fortune, also have close ties to Ranier and numerous news articles credit them with paying for his trips, jetting him around the world, and shutting down critics and whistleblowers through lawsuits.

In October of 2007, The New York Post reported,

“Executives and top associates of the Albany-based NXIVM group – along with their family members – donated $29,900 to Clinton’s presidential campaign, according to federal records.

On March 14 and April 13, records show, more than a dozen contributions poured into Clinton’s coffers from NXIVM, an executive and group-awareness training organization led by Brooklyn-born Keith Raniere, 47.

Most were from first-time political donors, each giving the $2,300 maximum.

NXIVM donated a similar amount that year to Republican politicians in a position to grant them political favors (see the NYP article).
NXIVM leadership had other ties to Clinton as well-

“…group President Nancy Salzman and the Bronfman sisters – are members of Bill’s charitable organization, the Clinton Global Initiative. Membership is by invitation only and requires at least a $15,000 donation per person for one year.” (NYP article linked above.)

Actress Allison Mack (Smallville, among others) has long been one of the top-ranking members of the NXIVM cult, a group accused of engaging in blackmailsex trafficking and forced labor.

In March, Ranier  was arrested and extradited from MExico oncharges of sex trafficking and related crimes, and Mack’s arrest followed in April.

Charges include child sex trafficking, sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy and forced labor conspiracy. The SunOnline claims to have seen Ranier’s arrest report and accusations include the sexual abuse of teenage girls, and one girl just 12 years old (he was 29 at the time).

You can see Mack’s court file here.  Note from the file:

Title 18, United States Code, Sections1591(a)(1), 1591(a)(2), 1591(b)(1), 1594(a),2 and 3551 et. seq. – SEX TRAFFICKINGOF CHILDREN OR BY FORCE, FRAUDOR COERCION (1)Title 18, United States Code, Sections1594(c) and 3551 et seq. – CONSPIRACYTO COMMIT SEX TRAFFICKING OFCHILDREN BY FORCE, FRAUD, OR COERCION

The details are somewhat lurid, and include using a cauterizing pen to brand female ‘slaves’ with the initials of Ranier and Mack, requiring compromising photographs and information for the purposes of blackmail, and various other submission rituals.  Allison Mack also recruited other women to become Ranier’s slaves. The SunOnline reported she had recruited at least 25 women.

According to The Rolling Stone, “Raniere allegedly gets financial help from high places
According to the U.S. Attorney’s detention memo, Clare W. Bronfman, heir to the Seagram’s fortune (and NXIVM’s self-described operations director) financially supports Raniere. (Bronfman has previously denied all accusations of coercion and abuse.) In the memo, prosecutors wrote, “[Bronfman] has financed the defendant repeatedly over the years including providing him with millions of dollars and paying for private air travel costing up to approximately $65,000 a flight. She has also paid for numerous lawyers to bring suits against NXIVM critics. Bronfman also owns a private island in Fiji, which the defendant has visited, and both Bronfman and the defendant have contacts all around the world.”
