    But do they work?

There are products that are ‘brighteners’ and they seem to work while they are on.
I tried testing whiteners by using a whitening deodorant on one armpit for a while and a regular deodorant on the other, but I kept forgetting which was which and couldn’t be consistent with application so my test failed.

To clarify, I think the brighteners work the same way some laundry detergents work- they have something like blue blockers that don’t really work skin deep, but on the surface kind of alter the spectrum that the eye sees. I use a Korean BB cream that does this and I love it- it evens out skin tone and makes my complexion appear rather fresh and dewy for a 55 year old grandmother of 12. But when I wash my face, the effect is gone.
