Who will be like Jesus?

This video is a bit out of date. Many of the children in that video have now aged out of the system and have become part of the grim orphan statistics you read in the video. Some were probably adopted. Some are fighting, resisting valiantly, even though the deck is stacked against them in an unfair deal they had no control over.

orphansStatistics say the boy on the right has about a 70% chance of being incarcerated in the next six years, and a 10-15% chance of being so unhappy and hopeless he commits suicide.  It is hard, very hard, for me to even write those words, but how much harder is it for this child and others like him to live this life?

We’re hoping to give him a reason not to be in that set of statistics, but it won’t be easy.  Four weeks of Christmas and 8 weeks of summer is not a magic bullet which implodes all those horrible statistics and blows away all of an orphan’s very legitimate reasons to despair.  Still, it’s better than nothing. We cling to the hope that it’s much better than nothing.   It’s a chance to apply some balm to wounded, heartsick young souls, to love on them, to teach them some basic – very basic- skills which might be of use to them in life, to love on them some more, and to love on them all over again and make sure they know they are loved.

In the words of this song by Audio Adrenaline:

Break our hearts once again
Help us to remember when
We were only children hoping for a friend
Won’t you look around
These are the lives that the world has forgotten
Waiting for doors of our hearts and our homes to open

[Chorus]

If not us, who will be like Jesus
To the least of these
If not us tell me who will be like Jesus
Like Jesus
To the least of these

I know compassion fatigue is real, and so many requests so close together grow tiresome.  it’s outside of my comfort zone as well, so much blegging.  But there are these four brothers, you see, and they have a need bigger than my petty insecurities.

thanks for reading, for sharing, praying, and for helping when and hwere you can.  https://www.youcaring.com/s-v-are-brothers-from-ukraine-525514
