FYB and Mop Top

16 years ago today God surprised us all by adding a boy to our family of six girls.
For the first 4-6 years our FYB lulled us into a sense of safety by being slow of speech, over-cautious, on the timid side, and more fond of stories than rough housing.

We scared him to death taking him to see his first real theater movie (The Polar Express) when he was 7, and he’s been getting his revenge ever since by regularly scaring me to death with his increasingly adventurous (and explosive) exploits.

He doesn’t appreciate mush and sentiment so I won’t talk about how he used to hum and pat my cheek while he nursed (until he was 2 1/2), and how he couldn’t have a good day until he climbed in my lap to snuggle in the morning, or how he had a string of favorite bedtime stories that he had so regularly we could all recite them by heart, or how his sisters felt like he could wheedle his way out of anything with a certain look while calling me ‘muvver’ in a particular tone, or how proud he makes me with his work ethic, his wonderful uncle skills, and his big brother care and attention of the two little boys we take care of from time to time, or how relieved and happy we were when he made his commitment to Christ.

Boy model 16 years and one day ago I didn’t think it mattered whether or seventh child was a boy or a girl. 16 years ago I learned that it made all the difference in the world. I can’t imagine life without him. I am so glad God shared him with us and look forward to his future exploits with fear, trepidation, and pride.
