I’m So Bad

Teen-aged Auntie is holding her nephew and trying to figure out what he’s asking for.

“C. h. i. p. s.,” spells the nephew’s mom.

“Huh?” says the very tired teenaged auntie, who has been staying up late with her out of town company for several nights.

Toddler’s mom tries again, only confusing the tired Auntie even more.

“Chipes?” she says tentatively, and the room erupts into laughter.

“It’s a good thing you’re so pretty,” says the teenager’s mean mom, just as the teen-ager realizes what she did.

“And I’m totally posting this online,” adds the poor teen’s mean mom.

Could be worse! Tired Daddy was reading with the toddler and called out, “What’s a dandeeleeone?”
I came to have a look and said, “Um – That’ll be a dandelion, sweetie!” Daddy “Ohhhhhh! Of course!”

I can honestly say that I have been in that situation and couldn’t figure out what words were coming out of the person’s mouth. Very disorienting.

We had just gotten some young foster kids, sleep was very much lacking (not even naps at that point), energy was abounding (for everyone except me) and I thought I did good remembering to shower and put on nice clothes for church. When someone asked, “Do you need anything? T.O.Y.s?” I just couldn’t figure out what they were talking about. I was so confused and just wanted some sleep. Finally another mom showed some compassion and just said the word. Even then it took me a few seconds to realize she had been spelling the word. Yup. Everyone got a great laugh out of it.

I’m just thankful my mom wasn’t there. She would have reacted the same way you did and I would never have lived it down.
