Sigh. This is certainly timely. I’ve been torn over what to do. I most definitely will NOT be voting for Obama, but I wasn’t the least bit excited about Romney, either. He’s just not all that different from Obama. More of the same except a few little changes.
I’ve been a Ron Paul fan for quite awhile and thought maybe I would just write him in. At least I’d be voting my conscience and not choosing the lesser of two evils in the hope of getting Obama out of office. I figure if people don’t start voting their conscience (even if that candidate “can’t win”), we’ll always be stuck with these same ineffective options.
Then I realized that write in votes don’t count in my state if the candidate isn’t officially registered as a write-in candidate. WHAT KIND OF LAW IS THIS? I don’t know, but I was dismayed, to say the least.
Then I started looking at Gary Johnson, because I am most definitely a libertarian. I was seriously disappointed to find that he’s pro-choice. It definitely put me off for a long time. But then I realized by not voting for him, I’d be cutting off my nose to spite my face. Overall, I agree with his platform and he WOULD make big changes, the kind of changes this country seriously needs. I decided that I’d have to compromise a little on my candidate, but that’s better than compromising so much of what I believe and voting for Romney. So, I guess Gary Johnson is my dude.
My concern is that more people will do what Valerie is planning to do. If you don’t want Obama, please vote for Romney! One of those two men will be our next president, and by voting for someone else who cannot win, you are effectively helping Obama to win. I think Romney is the better candidate (of the two), and I think his business sense can help our country, but mostly our country does not need 4 more years of Obama (for so many, many reasons).
This has been the argument since Regan, and it’s why we keep getting Democrat lite instead of serious conservatives. It’s like going back to an abusive husband repeatedly because he says the other guy is worse.
Exactly. Nothing is ever going to really change unless we ALL start voting for who we really think should win – the BEST person for the job. As long as we keep voting for the lesser of 2 evils, things are never going to get really and truly better. If you really like Romney, by all means, you should vote for him. But to tell me that I’m essentially dooming the country by voting for the candidate I truly think should be president….that is not democracy.
I’m actually sorry I ever commented. So my apologies to all because I reacted with a gut-level concern when I should have just kept my mouth shut (never a bad idea – don’t know why I don’t remember that more often). I don’t think you are dooming the country by your vote. I just understood from your original comment that you didn’t want Obama re-elected and I think there are a lot of people who feel that way who will vote for third-party candidates and Obama will end up being re-elected as a result. That’s all. I do not like dissent and debate and was not intentionally trying to stir any up. I am Catholic, and it is hugely important to me to get Obama OUT. That’s where I’m coming from and why I feel so strongly about voting for a candidate that I think might actually win. I don’t like the establishment Republican party any more than I like the establishment Democratic party. However, our religious freedom in this country is being threatened by Obama and his administration, and that’s of huge concern to me. I suspect we have many of the same concerns and share many of the same beliefs. For now, this is the best way I can manage my own concerns. Happily, we do still get to vote for who we want to. At least you vote!
Blessings to you all, because I appreciate so much that you do care. I believe that more important than anything is to continue to pray and ask for God’s guidance and His hand on this country. Sometimes I feel tempted to be afraid, but God is still in control and I must remember that.
Wow. Romney compared to an abusive husband? I wouldn’t vote at all if that were the case. He isn’t ideal, but he isn’t evil. I am a practical person. I understand that at this point this election is between two men, and I will vote for the one of the two that I prefer so that my vote isn’t wasted.
No, the establishment Republican party is the abusive husband.
Edited to add: Communicating to the establishment Republican pparty that their tactics are repulsive is not a wasted vote. Some would argue letting the status quo go is a wasted vote.
I was planning to vote for Gary Johnson, BUT since the Libya mess, and the cover-up of the Libya mess, and trying to pin the whole thing on one (albeit seemingly shady) guy and a YouTube trailer of a movie almost nobody has ever seen, and the subsequent attacks on the First Amendment, I may very well vote for Romney. Will Romney fix all our economic woes? No, but I know enough to be reasonably satisfied that he won’t do THAT.
Probably Virgil Goode as we’ve voted for Constitution Party candidates in the past, but we need to get around to actually checking him out. I love this article about voting for the lesser of two evils. http://www.visionarywomanhood.com/happened-god/
Thanks for the link, Heather. A good, well-stated read.
Those of voting age in our household will be voting for Virgil Goode of the Constitution Party. We voted for Chuck Baldwin (the CP presidential candidate four years ago), and other CP candidates in state and local races, because we feel our government, especially at the federal level, has gotten so far from constitutional principles. The CP puts up candidates who hold constitutional and biblical integrity in the highest regard.
My conscience will not allow me to vote for a candidate who is “the lesser of two evils”. I choose to cast my vote for candidates who uphold the values our family espouses, and trust God with the results.
For those interested in a further look into where the 3rd party candidates stand on the issues, there will be a debate hosted by the Free and Equal Elections Foundation in which the four alternative candidates listed in the DHM’s links above will face off on the issues. Obama and Romney have also been invited to this debate, but so far, only the presidential candidates for the Constitution, Libertarian, Green, and Justice parties have confirmed their participation.
The debate will be held at 8:00pm CST at University Club of Chicago in Chicago on Tuesday, October 23rd, and will be broadcast online at http://www.freeandequal.org/
A small correction and a reminder:
This debate is tonight at 8:00 pm Central Daylight Time.
Not sure if anyone will see this, but I thought I would clarify that, anyway. (Daylight time rather than standard time.)
I have long since left the time when I would choose Romney because he is not as bad as Obama, although I do understand the thinking. If nobody else votes for the principled man, I am only responsible for my vote. Among Constitution-supporting groups, I prefer the Constitution Party over the Libertarians because, with exceptions in both camps, the CP is made up mainly of Christians and people with strong Biblical moral standards, while the Libertarian Party is made up mostly of Libertines. It is true there are Christian Libertarians. Ron Paul is one.
Arkansas doesn’t allow write ins, and Goode isn’t on the ballot here. I haven’t been able to find out if any third parties are.
A friend recently tipped me off to the America’s Party (hope I got that right) founded by Alan Keyes. Their platform is very similar to the Constitution Party, which I voted for last time when I still lived in Texas.
Interesting note: I was listening to a radio program where they were interviewing people who were new Americans. One man said, about our elections, that when he became a new American, he was looking forward to voting in the elections finally, but couldn’t understand our political system. “Where I come from” he said, ” we have many, many candidates to choose from. I just don’t understand how you can pick from just two.”
Amen brother. I don’t understand either.
Oh, and my Husband said that if we had more than one candidate, they’d have to form a coalition government and they’d all have to figure out how to get along and get things done, or nothing would get done at all, and they’d all be thrown out in the next election.
I never thought of that.
Personally, I think we are all better off when they aren’t getting anything done.
