This is an ordinary cake made from a boxed cake mix. The frosting is a home-made buttercream frosting (powdered sugar, butter, a bit of milk). The colored sugar is made by mixing food coloring with regular white sugar. It’s ridiculously easy and frugal. You can put the sugar and food coloring in small jars (spice jars work) and shake vigorously, or you can put sugar and food coloring in a small ziplock bag and rub the food coloring through the sugar by massaging the outside of the bag.
The flowers were drawn in the frosting with a toothpick, and then the colored sugar was carefully sprinkled in the outline created by the toothpick and gently spread, using the end of a toothpick.
