Christmas Survey

1.) Have you started your Christmas shopping?

Yes. Today I have to pick up two presents for the local Angel-Tree program, and I want to make Blynken and Nod some play-dough, but other than that, I’ve been done for a couple of weeks now.

2.) Tell me about one of your special traditions.

Christmas Eve we dim the lights, sit around the tree, and sing Carols. Each member of the family picks one Christmas Carol, we all sing that one, and then that member of the family opens one gift. Then we go to bed and open the rest of the presents on Christmas Day.

3.) When do you put up your Tree?

We buy a fresh tree on or around December 15th. The Progeny have always thought this written in stone never deviated from rule was to prolong the season of decorating, to keep the tree fresh, to delay gratification- in short, they had all kinds of really cool philosophical ideas about it that their parents never thought of. The truth is that the first ten years or so of military pay, we never could afford to buy the tree until the midmonth paycheck. Rent and utilities ate up the other check. So we had to wait.

4.) Are you a Black Friday shopper?

Nope.

5.) Do you Travel at Christmas or Stay home?

Stay home. That would pretty much be my answer for every holiday, and most anything else as well. I would always rather stay home.

6.) What is your funniest Christmas memory?

Well, it wasn’t funny at the time, it was immensely traumatic, but now I would say it’s the year the Equuschick killed Santy Claus as a family tradition. And it wasn’t funny to our friends, but there was the time the FYG, well versed in the historical background of St. Nicholas and his transition into the more fairy tale like Santa Claus, kindly explained to a friend, “Well, there was a Santa Claus, but he’s dead now, and he’s been dead for a very long time.”

7.) What is your favorite Christmas Movie of All time?

That’s not a fair question. They are all wonderful. If I had to pick one I guess it would be
Oh, that is hard. Hard, hard, hard. Only one? I do not think I can.
The Original Christmas in Connecticut

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Boris Karloff

March of the Wooden Soldiers with Laurel and Hardy.

MGM Cartoon Christmas
, which features one of the most unusual (and well done) Christmas cartoons ever. Made in 1939 or so, it is an anti-war cartoon that I love, and I am no pacifist. It’s a tear jerker of a story told by Grandpa Squirrel to his little squirreling grandchildren about why there are no men left on earth. It’s called Peace on Earth and is also on this release. I discovered this on a VHS tape I picked up around 20 years ago when we had just gotten our first VHS player and television. It remains a popular favorite with all of us.
It’s a Wonderful Life is a must, of course, and so is the musical Scrooge.
A Christmas Story, naturally, in spite of the language

And Claymation Christmas.

8.) Do you do your own Christmas Baking? What’s your favorite treat?

Well, Pip has been doing most of our holiday baking this year, but yes, we bake from scratch. My personal favorite is nanaimo bars.

9.) Fake or Real Tree?

Real.

10.) What day (as a Mom) does the actual panic set in to get it all done?

Don’t know.

11.) Are you still wrapping presents on Christmas Eve?

Absolutely. With my husband. Last Christmas and I think the one before that, however, we divvied up the presents, the Progeny set up wrapping stations at different parts of the house, and we let them wrap some of their siblings’ presents. That was fun. The youngest two were our elves, and then ran about from room to room, knocking on the door to see if presents were ready to be delivered to the tree.

12.) What is your favorite family fun time at Christmas?

Decorating the tree, I think.

13.) What Christmas craft do you like the best?

I am not very crafty, but I do like these easy but pretty wax ornaments.

14.) Christmas music? Yes or No. And if yes, What is your favorite song?

Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.=)

No favorites. I love almost all of them.

15.) When do you plan to finish all your shopping?

Today.
