Copywork

Today for Copywork, JennyAnyDots and I were supposed to use a poem of our choice. Jenny did “Death, Be Not Proud” by John Donne, and I did High Flight, but Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee, Jr. who was in the RCAF.

“High Flight”

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds – and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

*smile* that’s the poem President Reagan chosen after the Challenger exploded back in ’86. (I believe)

Beautiful, and one of my favourites! I had to memorize this in school, and have never forgotten it.

I thought you would like to see this. We went to Arlington Cemetery at the beginning of August. This memorial is there.

A part of that poem is on the bottom of the headstone. Unfortunately, you can’t read it in the picture.
